I am surprised that no one has offered a meaning of this song as it must be Glen Campbell's most popular song. For me it's a very spiritual song as it represents the life long story of my father. He was a very humble man who lived a simple life but always was kind to & caring of others. He never aspired to greatness but lived to promote kindness & provide for his wife & family as best he could. This in my view made him a great man who was a local hero to friends & family. His reward will be in the afterlife where he will be greeted by the masses in a fanfair procession not unlike the entry of the Rhinestone Cowboy into a rodeo.
